We used to have a really cool, home-built food dehydrator that we got off of Freecycle. We dried our own tomatoes and apple chips in it - quite fun! And so nice to be able to pull out some homegrown dried tomatoes for use in our Winter cooking.

Since you're using homegrown tomatoes, share your post in our Grow Your Own roundup this month! Full details at

Thanks Anne-Marie!
The refrigerator makes all the difference as it keeps it too cold for the bacteria to grow although I must warn you the olive oil turns "hard" and "lard like" in the fridge but it tastes fine! I actually recommend storing all dried food in the refrigerator. Without any preservatives this extends the shelf life and decreases to almost zero the chances of bacterial growth.

Here is a link on it: http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/foodnut/09305.html

I had dehydrated soem tomatoes and stored them in olive oil. My brother-in-law mentioned that they are highly susceptible to botulism. have you ever heard this? it's made me wary of using them but maybe i should have been storing them in the fridge?

Thanks Shiela!
I was just looking into that a few months ago and then my interest began to "pewter out" when I had to wait so I pulled out their price sheet and am going to start saving my pennies! You pay for it up front but save so much and it is all ready storage ready I love it!

A great source for wheat berries is the Church of Latter Day Saints. I'm not sure what the website is, but if you search for LDS home storage, you should be able to find it.
There are certain distribution centers in every state & you do not have to be a member to purchase from them.
I can get 25lbs of Hard Red Wheat for about $6.50 & 25lbs of Hard White Wheat for about $5.75. I've been researching wheat berries on the net & LDS by far has the cheapest prices. Hope this helps!!

I do something very similar. I have twin 14 month olds, so this system works great for me. I use the permanent marker, just like you - and date the front of the ads. Then I put all the RP, S, GM, PG ads from the week together in a file folder and put the Sunday date on the outside of the file folder. I store them in our guest bedroom in magazine holders. This makes it super easy to find them before a shopping trip.
