Money Saving Monday: Financial Check-up

Be sure to check back every Monday for money saving tips for your family!

February is now completed so it is time to reflect on your budget? How did you do for your financial goals this month? As my husband and I sat down to evaluate February we were overall quite pleased. We stayed within our budget and spent a significant amount in toiletry items this month in addition. March is a longer month though so we are gearing up for the month ahead! We are happy to be well stocked in meat after last month which will hopefully pull us through March. Our number one expense this past month was whole wheat berry’s (I grind my own wheat) I guess I am baking more then I thought! It is making me consider other options for getting our wheat since we go through it in such great quantity.

I had mentioned earlier that I was keeping track of our grocery spending AND savings this month and here is the breakdown on how much (percentage wise) we saved implementing several money saving strategies (a side note I did not buy ANY products with high fructose corn syrup this month (or really ever) so these are savings on items that are relatively healthy!

February Total Savings: 53%

This savings on grocery and household items was reached by

Shopping store sales and specials: 20%

Using coupons, in store and in newspapers: 30%

Mail in rebates: 3.%

I’d say cutting our grocery bill in half is worth shopping strategically through coupons and sales just the motivation I need to keep saving through February!

How did you do for February? Any changes or ideas that you can think of to improve your budget for February?

A great source for wheat berries is the Church of Latter Day Saints. I’m not sure what the website is, but if you search for LDS home storage, you should be able to find it.
There are certain distribution centers in every state & you do not have to be a member to purchase from them.
I can get 25lbs of Hard Red Wheat for about $6.50 & 25lbs of Hard White Wheat for about $5.75. I’ve been researching wheat berries on the net & LDS by far has the cheapest prices. Hope this helps!!

  • Thanks Shiela!
I was just looking into that a few months ago and then my interest began to “pewter out” when I had to wait so I pulled out their price sheet and am going to start saving my pennies! You pay for it up front but save so much and it is all ready storage ready I love it!
